Shauna Shapiro talar om självomhändertagande för terapeuter. Forskning har visat att terapeuter är i riskzonen för arbetshandikappade i samband psykiska problem. Härav följer att egenvård kan vara ett värdefullt komplement till den professionella utbildningen av framtida terapeuter. Den aktuella studien undersökte effekterna av en metod för egenvård, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), för terapeuter i utbildning. Med hjälp av en prospektiv kohort-kontrollerad design fann studien deltagarna i MBSR programmet rapporterade betydande nedgång i stress, negativ inverkan, grubbel, stat och drag ångest och betydande ökningar av positiva påverka och själv-medkänsla. Signs of Compassion Fatigue What we used to call “burnout” is now also labeled “compassion fatigue,” ongoing overwhelm, “secondary traumatization,” and “nervous exhaustion”. People can become prey to this insidious form of emotional exhaustion. Those who constantly and conscientiously care for others, in whatever capacity, are the most vulnerable. This article explores the history, causes, treatments and prevention of compassion fatigue (the negative effects of helping others), contextualized for application to the trauma recovery efforts from the events of September 11, 2001. The author draws upon experience with development and implementation of the Accelerated Recovery Program for Compassion Fatigue, the Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist Training, and the provision of treatment and training to hundreds of caregivers suffering from compassion fatigue symptoms. A model for understanding the multiple causes of compassion fatigue is presented, along with distillation of the active ingredients for effective treatment and prevention of its symptoms.
